The Riverview Skating Club is a not-for-profit club sanctioned under the umbrella of Skate Canada. We are the only Skate Canada member club in West Hants and have been offering our programs for over 35 years. We offer programs for any and all skaters from Beginners to Competitive, pre-schoolers to adults. We conduct three 10-week sessions throughout the year beginning just after Labour Day and ending in mid-April. Due to the absence of the majority of our coaches and Program Assistants attending the Valley Open Competition this weekend, there will be no skating this Saturday, February 16th. Skaters and Parents are reminded that Saturday March 2nd is the StarSkate Provincial Competition which places us in a similar situation. As a result all programs are cancelled on that day as well.

Riverview Skating Club in Brooklyn is proud to announce that in September of last year, were selected as one of 45 Skating Clubs across Canada to introduce the new, improved CanSkate Program. There were many clubs who applied, but only 45 were given the go-ahead to start training to use this program starting in September. The Skate Canada has further modified the program and this year only 41 clubs nationwide are running the pilot program, of which we are proudly one.
Over the past 2 years, Skate Canada has continued to work towards implementing Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) philosophies into Skate Canada programming. It is an exciting time as they take the first steps towards making these philosophies a reality in our sport and making improvements in the program that will benefit all skaters. Reflecting work done by the LTAD Learn-To-Skate stage working group, feedback provided by coaches and other stakeholders over the past two sessions as well as concept testing done from Jan- April 2010, they have come forward with a draft revised CanSkate curriculum to be piloted during the 2010-2011 season, and we are part of this.
In the test sessions that Skate Canada ran, they found the new Fun Zone, and Fast Track Components received rave reviews. Hockey and Speed Skills were well received as well. Some revised concepts of the new program include more emphasis on speed and flexibility; earlier introduction of edges, turns and stroking basics; emphasis on skill progression; and Learn To Skate for all- i.e. Hockey, ringette, speed skating as well as figure skating. Emphasis is being placed on keeping parents informed as to what is going on the ice, so the coach will be talking to parents regularly.
As it is a pilot project, and is brand new, our CanSkate Coach, Lee-Anne Cross has received training this spring and summer, and will be in turn be training all the professional coaches and Program Assistants at Riverview in the new teaching format. As well, we must evaluate the programs effectiveness, so feed back will be collected throughout the session, as well as at the end. Once the pilot is completed, any necessary changes will be implemented into the curriculum, so parent feedback is important. Once complete, the new and improved CanSkate Program will be launched nation wide- and we will be in on the ground floor.
Programs start Sept 10 at the Newport Rink, with a full component of programs being offered. We have CanSkate, the StarSkate (figure-skating) Program, and Synchronized Skating to offer. A reminder that ordinarily, our programs proceed as long as the rink stays open and that when decisions are made to cancel events, it is usually done at short notice. If you are unsure whether or not a session has been cancelled, please check this site, listen to radio broadcasts on AVR 97.7, Magic 94.9 and K-Rock 89.3 or call the rink at 757-3194. Every effort is made to advise skaters and parents as quickly as possible when these events occur. Parents are advised to use their own judgement when taking to the roads.
